What is Flexeril?

Flexeril is a muscle relaxing medication that is used to relieve various skeletal muscle spasms and injury and pain associated with it. Flexeril is just a brand name of generic Cyclobenzaprine produced by McNeil Consumer and Speciality Pharmaceuticals.

Flexeril relieves pain and spasms by blocking the conduction of pain impulses from the nerve fibers to the brain.

Uses of Flexeril:

To relieve pain due to any musculoskeletal injury.

Injuries to the muscles produce muscular spasms to stop any further damage. These spasms can be very painful. Flexeril thus inhibits the muscular spasms relieving the pain occurring as a result of the injury.

Symptomatic Treatment of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition that is characterized by chronic musculoskeletal pain occurring throughout the body with other systemic signs such as mood disorders, insomnia, loss of appetite. It is estimated that in America alone around 5.8 million people suffer from fibromyalgia. Though Flexeril is the final cure for fibromyalgia, it has been used off-label to reduce the pain in fibromyalgia.

Flexeril Dosage:

Flexeril is available in the form of 5 mg or 10 mg tablets. It is usually prescribed as 5 mg tablets three times a day. Depending on the response of drug to the pain, the dose can be gradually increased up to 10 mg. the recommended duration of treatment is not more than 2 weeks due to its side effects.

People with hepatic or renal failure taking Flexeril should be carefully monitored as it may further increase the damage.
