It’s not a secret that there are kinds of food we should avoid before going to bed, in order to achieve a restful sleep, to help our body stay healthy. Also, we all know that we shouldn’t eat certain type of food at night because it could help us to gain a little more weight.
Here are some of the foods you should avoid before going to sleep:
1. Red Meat
After eating red meat, it is normal to feel heavy and bloated. If you want to eat this meat, it is rich in iron and tryptophan (which helps to sleep) keep in mind that need a long digestion time before bed.
The thing is that red meat is packed with protein and fat, which will have your stomach working hard all night. You should eat it at least three hours before going to bed.
2. Ice cream
Ice cream can be very rewarding, especially if you had a bad day, you have had a fight with your partner or you've taken the disappointment of your life, and we can’t deny it’s the most delicious way that helps us feel a little better. But it’s important that we remember that ice cream is loaded with fat, and it has a slow and difficult digestion.
It’s also loaded with sugar, so you'll give your body an extra energy right at the moment you need to be calm, so will you send your body conflicting messages. In addition, the unburned sugar will accumulate, and you know what will happen.
Although it may be surprising, celery is one of these foods you should not eat at night. The reason is because celery is a diuretic, which will cause more than normal need to urinate during the night. Diuretics raise the rate of urination, and pushing water through the system.
Vegetables are some of the most nutrient-rich foods that can give your body, but avoid celery if you do not want to disrupt sleep.
Pasta is a quick and easy solution for dinner, but it's not ideal. Pasta means carbohydrates, and if you go to bed immediately after dinner, all these hydrates will accumulate. For athletes or children may be okay, but if you're thinking about losing weight or not gaining weight, is not a good choice for dinner. To this we must add the fat and spices that are added to sauces, turning our dinner in a caloric one, and the digestion will be slower and more difficult.
Pizza is not what we could call a ‘‘light meal’’. The tomato sauce in the pizza, contains high levels of acidity, which is a catalyst for acid reflux. Also, the pizza usually has a very high fat content, and can cause heartburn. And that's the last thing you want your body to sleep.
6. Chocolate / candy
Chocolate bars and candy are delicious sweet snacks, but you have to avoid before bedtime if you want to have a restful sleep.
A recent study has shown that people who eat junk food (including the sweet kind) before sleep are more likely to have nightmares.
Cereals often contain high amounts of refined sugar and are loaded with carbohydrates. That would raise too much sugar levels in the blood, which is not the ideal place to relax before bedtime form.
Eating some dark chocolate as a night dessert could be our personal reward after a long day, but if you like to have a good and well deserved rest, you’ll have to give up chocolate.. at least at night.
Dark chocolate is a source of caffeine and is loaded with stimulants known to make the heart race a little.
Despite its excellent properties, garlic, like all the spicy food, can cause heartburn. It is known that sometimes it has the side effect of upsetting the stomach, so if you have a weak stomach suffer from acid reflux, the best thing you should do is to avoid garlic at dinner.
There is a general belief that large amounts of alcohol facilitate sleep and produce great dream, but that's not entirely accurate, since the rest you get, is not restful at all.
Alcohol interferes with sleep repair functions, and facilitates several shallow sleep and awakenings during the night. Besides that, people who regularly consume alcohol to fall asleep develop a dependence on it, creating a frustrating cycle.
